HOW TO BE A GOOD SPOKEN WORD POET

TIPS TO BE A BETTER SPOKEN WORDS POET

When writing slam poetry, using literary and poetic devices tactically and tastefully can be tricky - use too much and you drown your emphasis; too little and your poem has no flair. In many cases, trial and error is the best way to know what helps or hinders your delivery. The best poetic devices are the ones that make your words sound the way you want to make someone feel. Tough concept to grasp, I know - but with some practice you'll nail it!
If you're looking for ways to give your poem a pulse, to really set fire to the stage and put a riveting piece of knowledge out to the audience, then try tinkering with some of these poetic devices.

(13)poetic devices to use in your slam poetry - and how to use them!

1. Repetition
Repetition can be used for full verses, single lines or even just a single word or sound. The ultimate goal is to make something 'stick' better. If there's a main point you're conveying, or a message you want to resonate, try adding some form of repetition to see if you can make it stand out more. Repetition is a good aid to helping others understand the theme of your poem as well - especially in instances where other tools and imagery can actually hide the story behind your words.
Further to the emphasis of a specific sound or point, remember that slam poetry is also known as spoken word. SPOKEN! And when you speak it, you do it on stage. And when you perform on stage, you should have your poem memorized. Sooooo, back to repetition - yes, you got it - it helps you memorize your poem!

2. Rhyme
Theses are lines ending with same sound. Of all the poetic devices, rhyme is far and away my favorite - call it a product of a being a hip hop fan maybe. But I'm going to break this down a little for you. There are numerous types of rhymes that can be used to give your slam poem character - its not just about rhyming the last syllable of two lines. This goes a lot deeper than elementary rhymes - we all know that scheme, dream, team and cream rhyme. It doesn't take a wizard to put those together.

3. Alliteration
Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds also is the phonetic alignment and repeated use of a sound or letter in the first syllable of a word. Alliteration can be used for any combination of two words or more. As a poetic tool, alliteration is one of the oldest, most widely used and effective means of enhancing your poetry.
Example::"...To block out the boisterous battles of bellows / from behind barricaded doors / breachless ..."

4. Metaphor
I can probably say that until you truly master the art of metaphors, its difficult to call yourself a poet. Metaphors are a figurative means of comparing something to another unrelated entity in order to contrive the full meaning or impact of that something. A metaphor puts an object or concept in a more clear perspective, provides imagery and creates an analogy to give deeper understanding to a thing, a story, a message or a concept. A really strong metaphor should make your audience think differently about something.
Metaphors can be short and quick, or they can be entire stories in relation to something else. A short metaphor is something like these line from Strength - "suppressed by a substance's song" and "life is a two-way street". Grapefruit is an example of a long metaphor.
Taylor Mali had a great metaphoric poem that aligned love with owning a dog - check it out!

metaphor in slam poetry
Metaphors... think deeply about how often you use them in life. They come up in everyday thought. Take them and give them more vibrancy. In fact, as an exercise, try making up 10 new metaphors. They might even spark a new slam poem!

5. Assonance
Similar to alliteration, assonance uses the repetition of a sound. The difference is that assonance is the repetition of a vowel sound. This can be a really fun alternative to rhyme. An example would be "...frogs ribbit kiss fish in the distance bitch...". In this case the 'i' sound was repeated in several words. Another example of assonance would be "that black flag" - short and sweet, yet super effective!

6. Similes
A simile, much like a metaphor, is used as a comparison or an analogy. The difference is that similes use the word "like" or "as" in their comparison. Often what this does is ensure a listener understands there is a comparison and the meaning is not necessarily literal. An example of a simile would be "her womb was like a black hole." If I wanted to use that as a metaphor, it would read "her womb was a black hole." A metaphor is generally a stronger poetic device, but similes can bail you out of situations where the metaphor can be misconstrued; it keeps you out of trouble, so be sure to take advantage when you need to!
In Love Blossomed I opted for a simile here:
"Everything I thought I knew was interrupted like Trojan air by arrows..."

7. Onomatopoeia
The word onomatopoeia is honestly a pain in the ass to pronounce. It also sounds geeky - it reminds me of something I heard when reading ancient poetry and studying something boring in 7th grade English. However, its the contrary. Onomatopoeia is one of the coolest poetic devices out there; its when the phonetic pronunciation and sound of a word is parallel to the word's actual meaning. Adding these kinds of words to your slam poem really helps it jump from the page to the stage.
"I felt the whiplash crack of death slash by back so deep..."

8. Hyperbole
Hyperbole is the greatest, biggest poetic device ever!
 Get it?
Well, you will in a sec! Hyperbole is the rhetoric art of exaggeration. Hyperbole is a poetic tool that allows you to blow something way out of proportion. They create an effect of large emphasis. My recommendation is to only use hyperbole once in a while - over usage will totally diminish your story.
9. Personification
Personification can be defined as attributing a human characteristic to an inanimate object or notion. Here are a few examples of personification:
"the rain danced wildly in the wind"
"thunder rumbled like the grumbling anger of agods" (also a simile)
"her tears sang songs of the dead"
10. Pun (word play)
This simply means the play on words
... It spice up the poetry and make it sound good.
11. Paradox
12. Allusions
13. Attitude

Let's get one thing straight - this is spoken word! We call it slam poetry, so fuckin' slam!
When you get out there, when you have your words and you're armed with your message, you have to take full advantage of the moment. Leave your heart still beating on the stage. Don't let the audience even realize there's another poet coming up to bat behind you - they should be contemplating and mulling over your work for hours, days, weeks - fuck, there's poems I remember well from years ago. They stick because they were delivered with the right attitude. Spoken word is all about delivery - you have to make this experience a powerful one for your audience. Your words should light the night and blaze the stage (pop quiz - what tools did I just use).
A couple tips on how to perform slam poetry with attitude: use strong language (and your poetic devices!). Use the right intonation. Raise and lower your voice. Use the whole stage - own the stage. Use hand gestures. Have poise and use body language. Make eye contact (you should not be reading your poem). Have fun out there. Just go with it! You're an actor;

EMMYX {TERMINUS}

TERMINUS{THE END}                                                                I hear the screaming of dead souls in the dark,
many prayed for help and other wished they harken before death,
the closed door is waiting for the knock,
expecting who is gonna open the vault.
Billion multitude in the vale of decision,
seeing heaven and hell taken as an option,
no life examples don't wait for Goodluck,
Gods patience is gone and to the presidents Goodluck.
After you are done listening to my message,
you need to think twice and pick the right choice at your own advantage,
hell is not an option try to get the message,
salvation is the passage,
while heaven is the estate.
The bible been warning,
God is timing,
The world advancing,
His coming never remain static,
The coming of the lord the world soon passess.
The whole world will soon be trampled upon by so many unknown soilders,
what gonna be our fate if we fail to take cover,
the terrestial world is being stolen from us as every seconds count,
by some forces unknow we never know their where about.
People had never realise all humans are immortal,
because they think life ends at that point where they see it all over,
the body and soul are never on thesame chapter,
simply because the body dies and the soul remains forever.
Ironically life is a dream, when you wake up the end you see.
We are already in the middle of the sea, returning is not possible,
and going forward is the worst battle.
The world is like an oven and much more like a battle field,
only those who take heart and strive hard to survive wins.

Cash is dead and credit card the next,
the world increasing in knowledge so the dead,
globalisation has shut our eyes and now we are blinded to the fact,
the examination is ready because so many failed the test.
The pages are presently closing,  we've being hearing from the past,
we are on the days of the end the end of the last,
no time for more, you fight to survive,
it the end it the terminus it time to decide....... {Emmyx}....

READ THIS FROM EMMYX

The most sensible people in the society are the set of people who sees education as source of knowledge not source of income..
Education does not guarantee your chance of being successful, but increases it.
Life is all about calculus, all you need to do is calculate,
being succesful in life you walk with a formula.....called L.O.G.I.C {Love Of God and Incompareable Commitment},
If you think it can be hard to get connected,
Then see this other formula called B.I.B.L.E [Blessed Information Bringing Life Eternal]
So you see,
We need Education in life.
But most importantly we need God to Survive.....>{Emmyx}

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER KING JNR

•His birth name was actually Michael King Jr. His father was named Michael King and changed his first name to Martin Luther when he became a minister. The younger Michael changed his name to Martin as well, initially against his father's wishes.
•At 12 years old, distraught over his grandmother's death, King attempted to commit suicide by jumping out of a second-story window.
•He entered Moorehouse College at the age of only 15, thanks to a special wartime program intended to boost enrollment by admitting promising high school students. He graduated with a bachelor's degree at the age of 19.
•At first, he didn't want to become a preacher, preferring instead to be a doctor or lawyer.

•Because no honeymoon suites were available for African-Americans, King and his wife Coretta spent their wedding night at a friend's funeral parlor.
•In 1958, while at a book signing, he was stabbed by a mentally ill woman. The knife was so close to his aorta that if he had so much as sneezed he would have most likely have died. King didn't press any charges against the woman.
•He was a Trekkie. OK, he probably didn't own any Spock ears, but he was enough of a fan of the original "Star Trek" show to persuade actress Nichelle Nichols (who played Uhura) to stay on when she thought of leaving after the first season.
•Internet rumors to the contrary, there was never any evidence that King had any ties to any Communist organizations despite constant surveillance by the FBI.
•The final section of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech is believed to have been largely improvised.

When is Martin Luther King Jr. Day? What is closed?

When is Martin Luther King Jr. Day? What is closed?

•He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 at age 35, and remains youngest male to ever receive the prize. (Mairead Corrigan, co-founder of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement, is the youngest female.)
•King's autopsy revealed that though he was only 39 when he died, he had the heart of a 60-year-old man, assumedly stress-related.
•King was not the only member of his family to be assassinated. His mother, Alberta Williams King, was shot and killed in 1974 in her Atlanta church.
•He is the only U.S. citizen who never held political office to have a national holiday named after him.
•Although the federal holiday was enacted in 1983, all 50 states did not officially observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day until 2000.
•Martin Luther King Jr. Day also is celebrated in Toronto, Canada, and Hiroshima, Japan.

READ THIS POEM WRITTEN BY EMMYX TITLED: THE SUBTERRANEOUS FACTS

It high time we begin to see the reason we need to go,
Work on our selves the time is up and lets take the oath,
Because probably soon the doors may be closed,
And have been a victim and this is not a joke.
They say the whole world is divided and is to and fro,
And the only thing we need to start doing is to begin to put our ducks in the roll,
If we really want to sit on that throne,
We gat no choice no complains let just begin to swim with the flows.
Life is not all about competition but make sure you care about the people's vote,
Be the best you can be don't let anyone be the thief of your mode,
Stay original don't ever think twice about your tone,
But when they say what you are doing is not fair then you have a second thought about your tone.
We need to reload so our boat will not stop to float, cuz long ago our destiny had been pre-ordained and our documents are fold,
Our destiny and our talent should not remain untouched we are the tailor of our lives our clothes we should begin to sow,
And we should make sure our size is our coat,
Cuz everything we own and sow,
That we gonna reap and take as our load,
My dear youths it still morning I can hear the cock crow,
And please there is still time but at the same time we need to walk with time and play the role,
Stay in the zone and prepare to get your own,
Cuz we never knew the day death is gonna separate the body away from the soul.
If you wanna be remembered like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther king, Abraham Lincoln, and even Mohammed Ali, you can possibly do that on your own,
We need to be focus on the track until we hear the go,
And on the process we need to get the fastest Speed to destiny like ussein bolt.
My brothers and sisters the whole world is about making it on your own,
Friends and families can push you to the wall but God will never forget his own,
You strive hard and when that time comes like a timing explosive you gonna explode,
So don't lose faith, that esteem you think is low make it grow hold on to your struggle and keep rolling your boat your time is really close.
The whole world is an empty road you travel and walk yourself alone,
As everyday chameleons to night you should always think about your goals,
Every body living have a Judas who will always collect thirty piece of silver and that you should know,
You pride needs to be low,
Julius Caesar was powerful and intelligent his weakness was nothing but his pride was his coat,
As young people we should impregnate the future and watch the birth of our baby grow,
Life is never easy to break so we walk with the code,
But when ever your soul is broke, all you need do is pick up your phone, and call heaven he has promised us long ago, that even when we are broke in his power he reload,
And what ever we should do, we should never forget the old testament that the story that must not be sold,
It doesn't matter if we gat no money in our wallet just pretend be it a joke,
It time we stop gambling with our future and our soul and work with the principles to break the records and the pass code.
I never find the need to be successful until  I lost one who in my flesh was a bone,
Then I had to realize life in it own is a ring you fight to survive if you wanna rule your world like glo,
And don't make anyone convince you or Make you believe you've lost your own,
Cuz your destiny is attached to you like Mtn every where you go.
Am not doing this to preach hope,
And am not doing this for the love of my own,
But trust me am doing this because I have been scattered but someone else did this shit to pick up my bones,
Yes! I know the whole world is cold,
People don't care about anybody they care about their own,
The best thing in life is learn how to work with time as your wife and set and example on the track before you grow old,
They say God's time is the best, when the time comes how do you know,
It time to combat with procrastination and idleness and take the oath,
They say God's time is the best when the time comes how do you know,
No ! We don't have to play with our future.
I was born to realize life is all about your goals,
Either good or bad expect to see your folks,
Nothing last forever except your soul,
And lastly we should always be focused on the track until we hear the go......

EMMYX--•{BIRTHDAY POETRY FOR A FRIEND CHERILLE BROWN}>

I am so excited,my little hands prepare,
For a party magical, unique that will be rare.
Its my dearest friend birthday,
A pixie cutest and tiniest of today.
Sunshine amiably reflects a smile like a pogo baby,
Daisies, lilies, roses in  my garden get flowy.
Flowers wear makeup for cherille's bouquet,
Devoted fairies cook bake dishes and croquette.
A diminutive magical gnome takes charge,
For garden's ornamentation,he is incharge.
In collaberation with all,my garden gleams,
All well dressed,my pride beams.
A grand occasion its gonna be,
Birthday babe in pink frock,is happy to be.
Happy birthday cherille, long life and prosperity.

EMMYX ||-•TIME AND SILENCE•-|| {POETRY} PURCHASE $0

As I gaze upon a frail old man opposite me
He looks at me and a smile appears on his face
I decide to stop and talk to him for a while
To reflect upon those years gone by
Old man, where has your life gone?
Time has flown by, doesn't life moves so fast
Can you remember when you were younger?
Handsome man with long dark hair, the ladies loved,
but its all gone now, not even any grey patches
A gleam in your eye just like James Dean,
but your face is old and wrinkly now
Your hands were so strong, but now shake and shiver
Like a stallion, your strength was of legends,
but through the years you became so weak and fragile
Do you remember all the loves?
All those hearts your broke?
The one that broke your heart?
I know she skips through your mind from time to time
Such a beautiful woman, full of class,
you thought one day you would marry,
have lots of children and die happy.
Funny how life works out, how it never goes to plan
What you have today is never what you thought it would be
Do you remember all those who hurt you?
Through time you learnt to forgive,
life is too short for grudges
I know you miss your real beloved,
your precious mother, who sacrificed her life for you
Who held you so close the day you were born,
sadly, you lost her so young
Life was hard with so much poverty,
and I know you wonder what happened to your childhood,
but you got through and learnt how to spread love
You didn't let the demons defeat you,
because your were drawn to the angels
Think about all the happiness you brought,
how many tears you wiped away and how you listened
But what about those dreams you had?
Do you have many regrets?
Or is life too short for that?
Do you feel you have left behind a legacy?
I see loneliness in your eyes,
everyone you loved, has left in the end.
Are you happy with what you will leave behind?
Do you like what you see in the mirror?
As, I turn away from the mirror,
and tears roll down my face
I think to myself, what happened to the fun and the adventure
Whatever happened to all those passengers?
What happened to me?
But, then I remind myself,
life is what it is and everything happens for a reason
Some you win, some you lose
Life is too short for regret
It's good to reflect, but also good to be content...

MY RESEARCH ON RACISM

1.African-Americans comprise only 13% of the U.S. population and 14% of the monthly drug users, but are 37% of the people arrested for drug-related offenses in America.
2.Studies show that police are more likely to pull over and frisk blacks or Latinos than whites. In New York City, 80% of the stops made were blacks and Latinos, and 85% of those people were frisked, compared to a mere 8% of white people stopped.
3.After being arrested, African-Americans are 33% more likely than whites to be detained while facing a felony trial in New York.
4.In 2010, the U.S. Sentencing Commission reported that African Americans receive 10% longer sentences than whites through the federal system for the same crimes.
5.In 2009 African-Americans are 21% more likely than whites to receive mandatory minimum sentences and 20% more likely to be sentenced to prison than white drug defendants.
6.In a 2009 report, 2/3 of the criminals receiving life sentences were non-whites. In New York, it is 83%.
7.African Americans make up 57% of the people in state prisons for drug offenses.
8.The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics concluded that an African American male born in 2001 has a 32% chance of going to jail in his lifetime, while a Latino male has a 17% chance, and a white male only has a 6% chance.
9.In 2012, 51% of Americans expressed anti-black sentiments in a poll; a 3% increase from 2008.
10.A survey in 2011 revealed that 52% of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes.
11.Reports show that nearly 50% of Americans under 18 are minorities. The trend projects a reversal in the population where by 2030, the majority of people under 18 will be of color, and by 2042 nonwhites will be the majority of the U.S. population.

EMMYX -<>{LOST IN THE SHADOWS}<>-[POETRY ]

An enjoyment I thought it was,
But positivity in reverse was what it is,
An experience I thought I get,
but my six feet is getting close instead,
And now am so impervious to the call of a mother,
believing I can clear my mind artificially without the auxiliary of the natural,
Oh lord save me from the uncertainty of life,
why would my addiction be my weakness?
She is only a blut who snatches away time,
and make you feel you make a proper use of it,
I can only hear echoes of emptiness,
and the blackout as blind as darkness,
Who is that pirate who is gonna steal away the ship of negative addiction from me?

||--- READ THIS POEM ABOUT ILLUMINATI---||

The Illuminati Cometh
I'm a hypocritical heretic
I speak of blasphemy
you don't like the way my words
take effect on thee
you give up
on all your preaching
think I'm beyond teaching
and that makes me wiser
The illuminated ones
why can't they see
I have already
been saved, by me
stop forcing me
into your lies
I might be a lunatic
well crazy is on the rise
with all my sweet verses
I reverse curses
drawn up for me, specifically
I once rode on the back
of the morning star
we lit up the sky
filled shadows with insight
somewhat of a minister
it's sinister to me
my ultimate sacrifice
so all shall worship freely
higher powered Nazis
if their heart starts to desire
I've been elevating
I know you can see
way down below
on your path far beneath
worship and pray
as I lay down for rest
I've already been here
I just haven't confessed
I've seen it before me
just have to recollect
It cost so much blood
to follow your dreams
lower drops my focus
until it is just biding
for the right moment
its coming, I sewed it
like the great thread weaver
that made me a believer
although truth is distorted
I can make it all clear
all those higher powers
controlling with fear
